From Dreams to Sustained Impact
The Ashram
Founded in 1989, the Ashram aims to support underprivileged children through holistic development. It provides education, skill training, and cultural enrichment, preparing them for adulthood, promoting a sustainable future aligned with Tagore’s vision of Sriniketan.
The Initiation
In the early 1980s, Supriyo Tagore and his family visited the SOS Village in Kolkata, igniting a dream to give back to society. This small group began to turn their dream into reality, leading to the formation of the Santiniketan Sishutirtha Society in 1989. After years of dedication, the West Bengal Government donated 6 acres of land in 1991, and the esteemed social worker Late Pannalal Dasgupta laid the Foundation Stone. By 1999, the dream became a reality with five children – one girl and four boys.
Since then, over 30 children have successfully left the Ashram and settled into their lives. The Ashram relies on donations and, despite occasional struggles, continues to thrive with community support. In these challenging times, the perseverance of Santiniketan Sishutirtha reinforces our belief in humanity, as echoed by Rabindranath Tagore’s sentiment to not “commit the grievous sin of losing faith in Man.” We aim to pass this faith to future generations, ensuring that no child is left behind while the wheels of civilization move forward.
Education, Care, and Community
The Model
Children join us at the age of five or older, and we carefully evaluate each application. Children stay with us until they turn 18, allowing ample time to provide education, skills, and cultural refinement, preparing them to become well-rounded, employable adults.
SELECTION CRITERIA
- At least one absent or missing parent (recognizing labor migration as a significant issue).
- Certification from a government authority that the caregiver (single parent or relative) is below the poverty line.
- A thorough medical check-up to rule out serious illnesses, as we are not equipped to handle major medical issues.
- Verification through local connections for applicants within a 50 km radius.
- Interviews with the child and caregiver by board members.
UNITS
- Two units house 10 girls and 10 boys each.
- Resident parental figures, supervisors, and support staff care for the children.
EDUCATION
- Most children attend local government schools.
- Flexible support for higher education and vocational training based on individual capacity and interest.
CO-CURRICULAR
- Inspired by Rabindranath Tagore’s Ashram School, fine arts are compulsory.
- Training in dance, music, craft, painting, ceramics, and more.
THE FARM
- Farming inspired by Sriniketan, with children involved in producing and consuming organic food.
- Robust vegetable garden, fish pond, cow for dairy, and orchard for fruits.
SKILL DEVELOPMENT
- Focus on practical skills like Batik, sewing, and ceramics.
- Preparation for future professions through passion-driven skill development.
Bridging the two worlds
Ashram-School Connect
We foster connections between Ashram and School children through various activities. Ashram children guide their peers during Nature Walks, helping them discover the campus’s natural beauty. They also collaborate on major annual programs. Talented Ashram children receive free admission to the School, with reserved seats. Skilled in sewing, they contribute to the School’s uniform needs, providing a steady income source. The School also offers employment opportunities, ensuring a smooth transition for Ashram children into adulthood. As friendships form, the strong School alumni network can help secure employment for Ashram graduates.
